A young boy is born into happy family has his bright future ripped away in a horrible accident. Facing certain death, he survives countless hours of critical surgery & endures a long, torturous rehabilitation. Orphaned & disfigured, the boy vows to become a surgeon & follow in the footsteps of the kindly old doctor who was not willing to give up on him.
Many years later, the miracle worker Black Jack is born. A doctor of unearthly skill who can do the impossible on the operating table. A doctor who charges his patients unbelievable fees. And a doctor who plies his trade without a license.
It's not clear why he works underground. Perhaps his license was revoked, or perhaps he has too much contempt for formality to be licensed in the first place. But licensed or not, there's no denying that this man is a surgeon the likes of which the world has never seen.
Many come to seek his aid, from dubious characters to children & even animals. Patients on death's door, patients whom other doctors gave no chance, all turn to Black Jack as their last shred of hope.
When they arrive at the doctor's house overlooking the sea, they are greeted by his only companions, Pinoco, a childlike girl who claims to be an adult & a strange dog named Largo. And then the mysterious figure in black appears.

"I will perform the surgery. But it will cost you..."

Original manga issue #1: “Where is the doctor?� published November 19th 1973, & appeared in the English, French/Spanish editions as issue one.

Akudo, the rich, spoiled son of a wealthy capitalist, is mortally wounded in an accident while driving recklessly. His father calls in a host of doctors & promises great rewards if they heal his son, & terrible consequences if they fail. No doctor is willing to take on the hopeless case, until the mysterious unlicensed surgical genius Dr. Blackjack comes in.

Black Jack & Pinoko are caught in a storm while traveling, & taken in by an old woman. It is her sixtieth birthday, she says, & while she lives alone, she is excited because her three sons have promised to visit her today.

Black Jack Special ~ The 4 Miracles Of Life Ep. 3: U-18 Knew

Based on the original manga issue: “U-18 Knew It�, published as a Weekly Shonen Champion Special issue, March 10, 1976. French/Spanish edition vol. 2 #4, Italian vol. 10 # 94.

U-18 is a medical supercomputer, running a fully automated hospital in which all the functions of all nurses, doctors, pharmacists, are performed by one central machine with the world’s most advanced AI. When the computer malfunctions, it insists stubbornly that it is sick, that it is a human, & that only the famous Dr. Black Jack can heal it, & holds its patients hostage threatening to kill them if Black Jack is not summoned to treat it.

Black Jack Special ~ The 4 Miracles Of Life Ep. 4: Like A Pearl

Based on the original manga issue #29: "Sometimes Like Pearls," first published July 1st 1974. It appears in the English vol. 1, & the French/Spanish edition as vol. 1 #5.

This story retells, with few changes, what is perhaps the most famous single Black Jack story, portraying Black Jack’s relationship with Dr Honma, his mentor, teacher & father figure. After many years without contact, Black Jack receives a strange package from Dr. Honma, a long, rounded stone made of calcium, with a scalpel inside. Black Jack goes to visit Dr. Honma, who says he has something he must confess, & we hear the story of Black Jack’s accident, childhood, & the beginning of his medical career.
