buying a smartphone, unless it is a blackberry or an iphone. most developers are not going to be developing apps for other phones due to the lack of people buying them.

That's not true there are plenty of other smartphones in which apps are continuing to be developed.

Seems like a good idea, as long as it works well and isn't too expensive. However there's always a catch. So it might not be as good as their other products or maybe simply too expensive.
