| Ive been converting a lot of my japanese media to my Nokia 800, which natively views .AVI files at a unique resolution (400 x 280). Ultra MKV Converter is what I generally use since it a) relatively easy to use b) can set a video to a custom resolution c) can set hard sub subtitles since the N800 doesn't natively support it. d) can also be used to convert media to my IPod touch if needed This generally works with 75% of the files I've worked with. The times when it fails its often missing subtitles. I'm guessing its a function of ffdshow, which again I guess is its compression filter. At that point I have to get to real work and use Subtitle Workshop and and Virtual Dub. ps. to my previous post... For any MKV that fails to be easily converted with Ultra MKV converter, I use EM Total Video converter. The reason why I don't immediately recommend it is because knowing how to really use it takes a bit of understanding and effort - if you simply want a one-click encoder and dont want to bother learning bitrates or what demuxing is or the difference between a .sub and a .ogg file, it is not for you. However, it can generally convert anything Ive thrown at it and only truly fails when I have a corrupted file. Last edited by akibastyle; 12-10-2009 at 07:26 PM. ![]() I'll check out the ultra MKV converter its good to have extra options, TVC is my default video conversion program but it just didn't want to convert mkv's hence this thread I was wondering if theres a new version? Saying that TVC is brilliant for converting files to 3gp format and so on I have a Nokia Xpress music and have been having fun converting stuff for it.

| Hola Illumin, Now that I am understanding the intricacies of video file formats more and more, I am beginning to really use EM Total video converter as my default converter. I am writing this also as a piece of info for the general public so forgive me if Im going over anything you already know. TVC has 2 things going for it that make it my converter of choice in regards to anime 1) It has a built-in setup for hard encoding subtitles into a video. You can select FILTERS in the file window where you can actually setup subtitles , watermark etc. I used to run files under Virtual Dub to do this. 2) Under TOOLS on the bottom right corner there is a demuxer and multiplexer. This is hugely important since it allows me to work with files such as some MKV and any OGM I couldn't touch before. Once I understood these file formats are made up of component pieces of video, audio and subtitles, it becomes a simple matter of breaking files up (demux) then rejoin (multiplex) them into formats I can use. For example, Ultral MKV was producing junk when I put some MKV files through it. When I broke open these files using a demuxer, I discovered that the audio they use is OGG format. Ultra MKV cant handle it. So I changed the audio to MP3 and then multiplex back the video and convert that with the subtitles in them. Granted this may sound like a lot, but with the right programs its actually not bad. 1) Demux MKV or OGM file (separate programs MKVextract or OGMdemuxer) 2) If the audio is the issue, which is often the case, I use Audacity (another complete separate program) to convert the audio track I want to MP3 3) Multiplex back with Total Video Converter tools. 4) Convert the new joined file with the subtitles with TVC Figuring it all out took a while, but with this process I can convert a 30 min episode to my Nokia N800 or IPod touch in about 18 min. processing time. At the end of the day, a lot converters pretty much call on FFDShow or Memcoder or some other commonly available tool which is often free. What makes it worthwhile for the end user becomes a matter of ease of use and feature set (ie what files can it convert, can it add subtitles, etc..) Last edited by Zanzibak; 03-11-2009 at 11:34 PM. | Matroska is a container MOV and AVI, providing support to a wide variety of video and audio compression formats subtitles. This is not really intended for media content distribution on a large scale, but is that the achievement anyway. This is partly due to its incredible support for the formats of subtitles, including more than SRT, SSA and USF text subtitles or VobSub streams coming directly from the DVD. The team is currently working on a DVD menu structure-like format.

| FormatFactory. It's free, simple, and never disappointing me.. make sure to set AviSynth on, then you good to go. update: only on the AviSynth if needed. I don't how it's work, some files when AviSynth is 'on', it's getting worst, but sometimes when the files you converted got problem like- the files runtime is not full/ loss some of it, then turn on the AviSynth can solve it. Most case, not needed. Last edited by dFallen; 23-01-2011 at 09:41 AM. |
