As a cheap and efficient device to move data between computers, a USB drive is a good choice to store your valuable and vital data. But the only problem is when the USB drive with sensitive information gets lost or stolen! It may be a disaster to you because the lost or stolen USB drive may lead to the leakage of your privacy or your confidential company data. Fortunately, USB encryption software which enables you to encrypt USB drive can help you avoid the disaster. Personally I recommend Wondershare USB Drive Encryption. Read the following steps, and you'll find how easily to encrypt USB drive with the encryption tool. Step 1: Download the usb encryption software and install it in your PC. Step 2: Start USB Drive Encryption and plug-in your USB drive into computer. Step 3: Select your target USB drive and set the size of secure area, and then click "Install". Step 4: Set user name and a password, click "OK". The password should be easy for you to remember while hard for others to guess. And you'll never get it back if you forget it. A secure area has been created on USB drive which means the USB drive is encrypted. So now you can store all your personal data like credit card information, your online banking passwords or anything for that matter on your encrypted USB drive without anything to worry about.

USB flash drives are great because they are really cheap and you can conveniently move data between computers. The only problem is when you store sensitive data on a USB drive and it gets lost or stolen! Most people are intimidated by the words “encryption” because it involves fancy algorithms and names like “WPA, EFS, SHA1, etc”. However, there’s a very easy way to encrypt a USB drive in Windows. If you want to encrypt files on your computer, read my previous post on how to encrypt your hard drive using BitLocker. If you have lots of sensitive data on a laptop, you should read those articles on how to encrypt your computer data. Ok, so getting back to USB drives! We will use Windows Encrypting File System to create an encrypted folder on a thumb drive that only one user account on one computer can read. Later we’ll talk about how you can view those files on another computer, but for now we’ll focus on just having a secure USB drive.

As an alternative, some USB flash drives already have password protection. I have a Sansa brand one with U3 technology that I actually keep some files stored on, and its password protected. If I have to reset the password, it will wipe the entire flash drive.

true crypt is okay, but you can't use it portable or on public computers FreeOTFE has a portable explorer version that does not require admin capability to do it, but it will show up as a single file instead of hiding the partition. it's up to you.

Install TrueCrypt for Linux on your Ubuntu machine and verify you can access data on that volume. It's free, open source and has clients for all OSes.The documentation is quite complicated on how to achieve this, it depends on what length you want to go to keep your files encrypted.
