Err...because you cant be rankless when you join the military, anywhere. In the US you are simply a private when you join, but with no insignia. Its kind of like a training rank. Once you complete training you are promoted to PV-2 and you get the one chevron insignia. It goes from there.

and all my muscle's hurt from all the training and it's getting harder
