What's the rule on silent vowels?

For example the word desu, or names like Daisuke.

It's usually as far as I've noticed (or maybe even always) with the su syllable.
To be honest, I'm not sure of the exact rule, but most of the time somehow I do get it right instinctively.

I got down all the hiragana, most of the katakana, but Katrina kept me from learning Kanji.

Just wondering how many characters there are.

Anyway, there are 1945 kanji that are taught at school. These are the kanji you need to know to be able to read every day Japanese.
If you buy a book on kanji, they'll have these 1945 characters.
