that's one thing i like in some mangas, there's continuations not just with the major stories or arcs but with the whole.

Ahhh, fruits basket. They did screw up that series mightily.
The other answers pretty much sum it up, but might i also emphasize the point that sometimes a series is so popular they start animating before the manga has revealed some vital plot points.
Personally i've always liked the changes from the anime to the manga, even if it doesn't stick true to the story it gives you a different angle and sometimes adds a bit extra to the series. I actually don't like it when the anime is the same as the manga.
Be prepared for many more manga to anime stuff-ups though.
