My dad's side of the family still lives mostly in the Adirondacks (in and around the Glenns Falls area. I live about 45 minutes from New York City now, but I used to live up in North Creek (40 min away from glenns falls and the home of gore mnt). My military unit is the new york state guard, and the only time i am deployed is in the event of a state or surrounding state's emergency.
