what is a codec?!?!? you ask. for every type of file you play, you need a corresponding codec. so for an AVI, there's an avi codec [included with windows in this case]. for a MKV video file there's a matroska video codec that makes the video file play. no codec - no video.

no codec - no audio. yes - audio files need codecs to play as well. WMA codecs come with Windows Media Player. MP3, OGG, APE and other audio codecs do NOT come with Windows and need to be installed [correctly i might add] in order to hear songs encoded in these formats.

but K-Lite Mega Codec Pack comes with more than just codecs and an installer that works to make your life easier. Media Player is a super small footprint, no resource hog, player for audio or video. with Media Player, you really have no need of another player [altho my fav of jetAudio is more powerful, sleeker, cooler, and ... well you get it] for all your audio/video needs. it's interface is simple, it's a very good program [prolly beCAUSE of it's simplicity!!!].

upon installing K-Lite Mega Codec Pack you have MANY configuration options. unless you're a computer wiz, just click next [accepting the default setting] UNTIL you reach the Media Player configuration options.

now decide if you want Media Player as your default player [the one that comes up everytime you double click on an audio or video file] if you do, then click on "Audio file extensions:" the topmost box on the right to check it and everything below it [see spoiler below]. if you DO NOT want Media Player as your default player, then click on "Video file extensions:" the topmost box on the left to uncheck it [see spoiler below].

not only does the ease of use warrant Wavepad's use, but this program is LOADED with tweaks and power that other freeware audio editors only dream about [if programs CAN dream ... hmmm].

FastRecord is the free - no install - tiny footprint recorder that allows a Windows user to record anything the hear [YouTube, etc.]

FastRecord was created for Windows 95 but runs on XP. just extract the zip file to a folder [for example C:\Program Files\Tools], right click on it the file, go to "Send To .." in the menu that comes up and click on "Desktop [create shortcut]". this puts a shortcut called "FastRec" on your desktop.

when you click on your new "FastRec" icon [i rename mine to FastRecord], the program runs an icon in your system tray. right click on it - go to "options" in the menu and change the first field to "C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\ALL USERS\DESKTOP\".

next go to the "Control Panel", to "Sounds and Audio Devices" and click on the "Audio" tab. then click on the "Volume" button under "Sound Recording". change the default device to "Wave" or "What U Hear" by checkmarking the "Select" box [it's probably on "Microphone" by default].

now when you click on FastRecord, a new file [record1, record2, etc.] will appear on your desktop. so when you're listening to that new song on YouTube, FastRecord it. then use WavePad [mentioned earlier in this thread] to crop it, and listen to your new song til your heart's content!

PS - MAKE SURE YOU RIGHT CLICK ON THE SYSTRAY ICON AND "QUIT" FASTRECORD OR YOUR WINDOWS WILL HANG ON SHUTDOWN. one minor quirk for a GREAT program!!!

Koyote Free Mp3 Wma Converter in a simple converter and CD ripper.

unpon installing Koyote Free Mp3 Wma Converter the first thing you MUST do is UNCHECK the "change my page to Yahoo" and UNCHECK the "Dealio Toolbar". BLEH!!! and the last option to change - UNCHECK "install an icon to QuickLaunch"

when done double click the icon on your desktop - and two things come up! the internet [DOUBLE BLEH!!] and once you close the Koyote Free Mp3 Wma Converter homepage, choose your language in the window and then you're OFF and converting.

have fun with Koyote Free Mp3 Wma Converter.

FYI - my absolute FAVORITE converter is jetAudio - but to convert to MP3 with jetAudio you need the full version [$29] [also - which i own].
